Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but within Together exists a intense contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
